Event description

Description

You are invited to learn more about a career in maritime during London International Shipping Week 2019

Are you a school leaver, in post-16 education, or in work with an interest in maritime? Then come aboard the NLV Pharos on the 12 September at 3pm to meet and hear first-hand from those working across Britain's £40bn maritime sector, made up of the shipping, ports, professional services, engineering and leisure marine industries.

London International Shipping Week is the world's leading maritime event, where thousands of maritime leaders from across the world will descend on the British capital for a week of thought-leading events, conferences, seminars and networking. London is regarded as the world’s leading centre for the provision of professional maritime services.

Maritime UK, the sector's umbrella body, is hosting a Careers Hub onboard the ship NLV Pharos, moored alongside HMS Belfast for the occasion. Over 450 people will visit the Hub throughout the day, including a session focused specifically at school leavers, those at university, college or already working. The third session of the day, open to the public, begins at 3pm.

Activity in this session includes:

  • The chance to learn about each of the UK's maritime industries at the shipping, ports, services, engineering and leisure marine zones
  • An opportunity to tour the Northern Lighthouse Board vessel, NLV Pharos
  • Presentations and Q&As from those already working in the sector, to share their insight, tips and advice
  • An interactive area where attendees can get hands-on with some of the UK's most cutting-edge maritime tech

This free event requires registration to attend.

Owing to its position as an island nation, the UK is proud to have one of the most vibrant and competitive maritime sectors in the world – and our competitiveness is not solely down to efficient tax regimes and a stable business climate. Quite simply, the UK is a maritime leader because of its workforce.

With sea trade expected to double in the next 20 years, the need for a highly skilled workforce has never been greater. The UK is committed to providing world-class seafarers, port workers, engineers, naval architects, shipbrokers, financiers, accountants, consultants, insurers and lawyers, so that – together – they can meet the long-term needs of this global sector.

The international maritime community recognises the UK’s unequalled expertise, thought leadership, and world-leading innovation – and we never stop looking for the brightest and best people to join our sector.

Average pay in the maritime sector is far higher than the national average - £11,700 a year more, in fact, and offers a breadth of opportunity unlike any other sector, both onshore and at sea. The UK government estimates that the global maritime sector will double in value to $3trn by 2030, and with its brand-new legal commitment to reach #NetZero carbon emissions, there will be significant opportunities in exciting areas like clean growth.

Other sessions throughout the day are targeted toward primary and secondary school groups. If you are interested in joining these sessions, please contact Linn Vardheim at Maritime UK.
