Event description

Description

This event is being run to share plans for the creation of a multi-agency, multi-disciplinary team to support at risk young people aged 13-17 years with voluntary organisations that are interested in seconding staff to this team and being involved as partners in this exciting development.

Attendees will find out more about this development, the proposals for the secondment arrangements and the character of relationship envisaged with voluntary sector partners. It will also provide the opportunity to comment on the proposals for secondment, influence the way in which they are set up, and how the organisational relationships and social value / legacy benefits can be maximised.

The development of this team has come about as a result of learning from a 12 month social care pilot to support 13-17 year old young people on Child in Need (CIN) or Child Protection (CP) plans which aimed to minimise and manage the risks posed by young people engaging in activities related to drugs, alcohol, child sexual exploitation, criminal behaviour, gangs, and radicalisation, and to keep young people from coming into care by supporting them to live safely with their families.

The pilot identified that working with this specific age group enabled effective relationships to be built with young people and their parents through frequency of visits and the ability to respond to crises. The pilot also highlighted the need to develop the model further by:

  • protecting case loads to ensure the consistency and flexibility that is crucial to building effective relationships;

  • increasing the range of skills and expertise in relation to gangs and child sexual exploitation;

  • developing opportunities to implement planned group-work activities, as opposed to “fire-fighting / crisis intervention;

  • bringing in mediation skills to respond to risks of placement breakdown;

  • improving staff knowledge and skills in relation to self-harm, sexual health, legal rights, consent, and social media

The team's work will be based on the Trauma Recovery Model.
