About the Day:

This all day session will look at the ways in which museums mark and label objects in the collection. It will include:

· The reasons for marking objects (and for not marking some)

· What materials and methods are suitable for use with different types of objects

· How to choose an appropriate place and method for marking an object

· Practical sessions on marking objects

· Discussions about specific issues

Who should attend?

This session is free to attend for anyone working in a museum in Cornwall (paid or volunteer) who wants to know how to look after and work with the collection, especially how to document, mark and label objects. No previous experience or training is necessary.

Places are limited to a maximum of two attendees per museum.

What will you learn?

Attendees will learn:

· Why objects are marked or labelled in different ways

· How to choose a marking or labelling method

· How to choose a suitable place for marking an object

· How to write clear, unmistakeable, museum numbers

Delegates are welcome to bring specific questions and issues to the session. If possible they should read their museum’s Collection Care & Conservation Policy and Plan before the session.

Session Leader:

Helena Jaeschke is an accredited conservator with a degree in archaeological conservation and more than 40 years’ experience working with museums and collections in the UK and overseas. She supports museums across the southwest with all aspects of caring for their collections and supporting environmental sustainability,
