Event description

Description

For more than 50 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music’s greatest innovators – one of its best loved and most enthusiastic figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it.

Trailblazing musical partnerships with Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick and Norma Waterson (among others) have resulted in more than fifty albums, from the eponymous Martin Carthy (1965) to his collaboration with his daughter, Eliza Carthy, The Moral of the Elephant (2014). Whether in the folk clubs or on stage, or making TV appearances, there are few roles that Martin hasn’t played. He was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2014.

He’s a ballad singer, a ground-breaking guitarist and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. Most significant of all, his settings of traditional songs with guitar have influenced several generation of artists on both sides of the Atlantic, including most famously Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. Yet despite his position at the top of folk music’s pantheon of greats, he still follows his insatiable musical curiosity. Where will that lead him this evening? In a candlelit fifteenth-century building, which retains its superb acoustic qualities, we can look forward to an extraordinary and memorable musical experience.

There will be a licensed bar. Doors open 18:45.
