Event description

Description

Martin Pistorius was born in South Africa and has had an unusual journey through life thus far. Following an illness which left him with a significant disability, a wheelchair user and physically unable to speak, he spent 14 years in institutions for people with profound mental and physical disabilities. In 2001 he was assessed at the University of Pretoria's Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CAAC) following which he learnt to communicate via computer and communication boards, became literate, made friends, and rebuilt his life.

It seems almost unthinkable to be silent. However for Martin, his journey through life to took him down a path of extreme silence. This event will tell his story and explore the strength and unexpected lessons he has discovered within silence.

A book signing and drinks reception will follow Martin's talk.

This is the 2017 Margaret Harris Lecture on Religion in partnership with the University of Dundee's Chaplaincy Centre.
