Martyn's Law
York BID is pleased to invite local business representatives and partners to an informative event focussing on Martyn's Law, on Thursday 25th September, from 6pm, at Impossible, York.
Martyn's Law, officially titled the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, is landmark UK legislation designed to strengthen how public venues, workplaces, and event spaces prepare for and respond to the threat of terrorism. While it directly applies to venues with a capacity of over 200 people, it is relevant to all organisations, regardless of size.
We'll be joined by Figen Murray OBE, the driving force behind Martyn's Law and mother of Martyn Hett, one of the 22 victims of the Manchester Arena bombing on 22nd May 2017. Figen will discuss the journey of Martyn's Law to Royal Assent and the credibility and impact of the legislation, including what businesses can do during the implementation period which will end on April 2027.
We'll also hear from Nathan Emmerich, a strategic communications expert with a breadth of experience working on national security communications for the UK Home Office and Counter Terrorism Policing. Nathan will discuss how businesses should use Martyn's Law as an opportunity to proactively consider their internal and external communication functions to mitigate risk and reduce instances of hostile reconnaissance
