Erawan has the meaning of water, clouds, and rainbow. It is the sacred name of a white elephant with 33 heads. The traditional tale has it that Erawan is the vehicle of Indra, a Hindu highest god.
Inspired by the sacred elephant, a well-known antique collector, Lek Viriyapant built Erawan Museum to preserve his priceless antique collection as a cultural heritage for the next generation of Thailand. With a wide range of architectural symbols combined with fine arts and craftsmanship, the Erawan Museum creates a unique atmosphere that induces visitors to appreciate the continuity of history, cultures, religions, arts and customs of faith from past to present.
Erawan Museum is well known for its giant three-headed elephant art sculpture as exterior. The sacred elephant made of bronze weighs 250 tons, is 29 meters high, 39 meters long and stands on a 15-meter-high (49 ft) pedestal. Inside the elephant, it is divided into 3 worlds according to the Hindu representation of the universe, which consists of the Underworld, Earth, and Heaven. Each space presents outstanding architecture and marvelous Thai craftsmanship that can make us feel like walking in a dream...
Let's have a beautiful walk in Erawan Museum with the prayer of Elephant God! A time to honor the universe.
