HND Acting presents Mary Barnes by David Edgar
Mary Barnes is based on the true story of the title characters time in Kingsley Hall, an experimental, community based mental health facility which operated in London in the 1960’s. Here Mary was guided through her mental breakdown and schizophrenia without the use of pharmaceutical, invasive or electro shock therapies, rather the notion that she is allowed to regress to an almost fetal state before growing up and learning to live again. Part of the therapy involved the use of art as an expressive tool, using crayons rather than her own excrement which was her preference. Mary Barnes later became a celebrated artist and poet before her death in 2001.
