We are delighted to invite you to join us at a high profile meeting and panel discussion to discuss the preparations being undertaken to prepare London for the 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games.

The London 2012 Games will be one of the largest mass gatherings on earth, with 8 million Olympic and 2 million Paralympic tickets available to spectators. 10,500 athletes representing 205 countries will take part in competitions across 34 venues within the UK. As such, it poses a number of significant public health challenges to health and security authorities both within the UK and abroad.

The distinguished panel will include representatives from the UK Health Protection Agency (HPA), the World Health Organisation (WHO) and London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and our special guest speaker, the Saudi Arabian Deputy Minister for Public Health who shall share with us his considerable learnings from the Hajj festival, the world’s largest annual mass gathering.

The panel will also review the considerable progress made in the health and security planning of mass gatherings over the past decade, and the development of the medical sub-speciality of mass gatherings medicine through bringing together key figures in public health to consider how international collaboration can increase resilience to such health and security risks in future.

We look forward to welcoming you to the meeting.

Confirmed speakers on the panel include:

Dr Brian McCloskey, London Regional Director & Head of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Mass Gatherings, Health Protection Agency, UK
Professor Ziad Memish, Deputy Minister for Public Health, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Dr Maurizio Barbeschi, Head of the Deliberate Events & Mass Gatherings group, World Health Organization, Geneva
Dr Valerie Curtis, Director, Hygiene Research Centre, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine
• Dr Richard Budgett, Chief Medical Officer for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, LOCOG, UK
