Master of the Great Game: Alexander Burnes

Thursday 2 November, 2 pm

Alexander Burnes was blamed by Victorian historians for much of the debacle of the First Afghan War, and castigated by them for his sex life. He is known today primarily as characters in George MacDonald Fraser's first Flashman novel, and in William Dalrymple's 'Return of A King'. Yet he was an explorer as famous as the later Burton or Livingstone, and an author who outsold his great-uncle, Robert Burns. Craig Murray's biography of Burnes uncovers startling truths about this great spy and adventurer.
