Event description
An evening session with Liam Schofield on airtightness in retrofit.

About this Event

This FREE practical session will use airtightness leak testing equipment to look at and discuss practical solutions to key airtightness issues in an existing house.

Liam has experience in both PassivHaus and EnerPhit construction.

Session will cover:

  • Why airtightness?
  • Identifying problem areas
  • Finding solutions
  • Which products to use
  • Practical demonstration

This session for: Builders, sole traders, SMEs, handypeople, compentent DIY-ers

Why

When looking at energy efficiency in buildings airtightness is as important as insulation. Issues such as thermal bypass and air movement can significantly reduce the effectiveness of insulation measures and impact the energy performance of a building.

Where

The training will take place in a Carbon Co-op members house in Levenshulme. Full details of the location will be emailed once registered.

When

5 - 7.30pm, 12th November, Levenshulme

Refreshments will be available, limited on-street parking.

Trainer

Liam Schofield

Liam has worked in PassivHaus and EnerPhit construction for 8 years, beginning his career on Lancaster Co-housing where he became responsible for ensuring all houses surpassed the 0.6A/ch requirement.

He moved on from this to Erneley close in Manchester, a retrofit of 32 social housing maisonettes. On this he worked with the main contractor and one of their experienced project managers to install and test the airtight envelope. To achieve this they also trained two other site operatives onsite and became responsible for liaising with trades to ensure the airtight fabric remained undamaged and also took on responsibility for making sure the insulation was carried out to the required standard.

He has worked as a main contractor on a variety of projects including a Victorian end terrace in Lancaster that met newbuild PassivHaus standard and an EnerPHit project near Manchester that passed the airtest at 0.67 a/ch.

He specialises in refurbishment projects and has worked on many as an 'airtightness champion', not just installing the airtight layer but also training site operatives in how to work on an airtight, super insulated build.

He is a trustee of the AECB (Association of Environment Conscious Builders) and believes strongly that this style of building needs to become the mainstream as this is the only way the existing UK housing stock and newbuild at any scale can play its part in combating climate change.
