Description

Course Datesl:

This course runs on the first four Tuesdays in October - 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th. One ticket signs you up for all four dates.

Course description :

Over four weeks, this masterclass course will show you how to take digital electronics projects from your workbench and onto manufactured printed circuit boards (PCBs) using CAD software.

Maybe you’ve looked at a tangle of jumper wires on a breadboard and wondered how to take your electronics project beyond that point. Perhaps you’ve got an installation made out of lots of Arduinos, shields, and breakout boards and you’d like to make it more reliable and easier to reproduce. Or if you’ve got a prototype on your desk that you’d like to take the first stages of manufacturing: this masterclass will give you the tools to embark on that process.

Taking an Arduino-based project as a starting point, you’ll learn:

  • how PCBs are made;
  • key concepts of PCB design software;
  • how to make a schematic for our prototype;
  • how to turn that schematic into a board layout;
  • how to source and select components for your boards;
  • how to get your boards manufactured affordably;
  • how to put everything together, and assemble your prototypes!

We’ll use Autodesk EAGLE as our software of choice: it’s free for our purposes, works on all major operating systems, and popular in the maker community. You won’t just be learning how to operate software, though - you’ll be learning more generic skills and processes.

Who this is for :

This is an intermediate-level masterclass. You don’t need any knowledge of CAD software or any formal electronics training. But: you should some very basic experience of electronics - perhaps some tinkering with microcontroller projects (eg Arduino, Teensy, mbed) on breadboards. Maybe you’ve made complete projects or installations out of such technology.

Though this is a course about electronics, its main focus is on computer-aided design tools.

What you need :

You will need to bring your own laptop (Windows, Mac, Linux) to the sessions. You’ll be given details of what you need to download and install prior to the workshop. All software we’re using will be free for our purposes.

Who’s running the course :

Tom Armitage is a creative technologist based at Makerversity. He’s built electronics for installations, developed Internet-of-Things prototpyes, and runs Foxfield Instruments, a label for electronic musical instruments and kits.
