Description
In keeping with our current Good Shop theme REBORN, we are collaborating with the Zuiderzee Museum to celebrate handmade garments through combined storytelling of the past, present and future of our clothing and with tips on how to extend the life of your clothing.
This event is a Masterclass on How to re-value your clothing and is the official launch of the collaboration between the two museums. Fashion for Good Experience Manager Gwen Boon kicks off the event with an explanation on how important the consumer is in transforming the fashion industry.
In their exhibition Fine Birds Make Fine Feathers, the Zuiderzee Museum shows that extending the life of your clothing is anything but new: in earlier times, when clothes were made by hand, it was perfectly normal to repair worn clothing.
Join the Masterclass for an exciting history lesson from Femke Papma, Exhibitions Project Manager at the Zuiderzee Museum, and rediscover the century old lessons from the women of back then, to make our current clothes more sustainable.
Hilde Cammel, Curator at the Zuiderzee Museum, elaborates on their unique collection of traditional costumes and contemporary fashion, sharing beautiful examples of regional differences in the application of handcraft techniques in traditional costumes. These techniques still provide inspiration for today's fashion designers like Jan Taminiau and Alexander van Slobbe.
Designer Saskia van Drimmelen and artist Margreet Sweerts join the Masterclass to share the results of their special GOLDEN JOINERY workshop from earlier in the day, where garments are mended with golden thread. This technique is inspired by the Japanese Kintsugi technique, where broken porcelain is visibly healed with gold to celebrate the imperfection rather than hide the repair.
