Description

Dr Catherine Grant (University of Sussex) writes about and teaches media. She is well known for her video essays made of found footage. She also runs Film Studies For Free, a regularly updated web-archive of links to the best resources in moving image studies. The website, with its associated micro-blogs, has a large international readership, including around 20,000 regular followers. In March 2014, Grant became founding co-editor of [in]TRANSITION, the first ever peer-reviewed journal of videographic film and moving image studies.

Dr Grant will talk about practical aspects of essayistic filmmaking, its ambitions and frustrations. Her masterclass will be followed by a screening of the essay films produced in the filmmaking experiment (see above).

Organised by

Birkbeck Institute for the Moving Image (BIMI) is a response to the growing interest in film and the moving image across the College. Through public events and academic research initiatives, BIMI will address a wide variety of contemporary issues, particularly those relevant to its interdisciplinary structure.  Working closely with the Birkbeck Cinema, BIMI programmes public screenings and special seasons, making use of 35 mm film in addition to the Cinema’s high quality DVD projection.

We will be running from research seminars to film screenings. Please check these pages for further details in the coming weeks.
