The Academy for Education and Professional Development

Masterclass: Seeing the individual behind the ‘student’

Date: Friday 29th September

Time: 10.00 – 1.00

Location: University Place, Room 5.206

The Academy for Education and Professional Development’s mission is “To ensure consistent high-quality development and delivery of educational programmes with students experience at their heart”. Academy events are open to all those who contribute to the development, delivery and management of FBMH undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development programmes including staff from across the University, the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre and our NHS clinical education partners.

Background

We all group people into categories to help us to simplify our complex social world, organise our lives and clarify our communications, but sometimes ‘assigning’ individuals to a group identity can mean that we overlook their individual characteristics, experiences and life circumstances. Of course we teach, advise and support ‘students’, but beyond sharing that label and being registered as a student, can we really assume anything else about each group member’s motivations, goals, and abilities?

Masterclass overview (3 hours)

We will introduce a number of psychological constructs and theories that we can apply to staff-student interactions and teaching and learning in general. The over-arching aim of the session is to inspire us to always work with our students as individuals who bring their own unique set of characteristics, skills and experiences to the learning environment. By leading discussion around some fundamental concepts in human behaviour, such as identity, cognitive development, attachment and personality we will encourage attendees to look for areas of their practice that can be influenced by taking into account these human factors.

The session will cover the following ideas:

  1. 1. Identity development in adolescence and early adulthood
  2. 2. Social identity theory: ‘student’ is just one ‘identity’
  3. 3. Attachment theory and the adult learner
  4. 4. Individual differences in attainment, motivation and experience

The Masterclass has been flexibly designed so that you can attend the whole or part of the session. If you will not be attending the full session, then please indicate when booking that you need to leave early.

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Recognise and reflect on varied individual factors that impact students’ experience of university
  • Consider ways of integrating your understanding into your teaching and communication practice
  • Draw upon some aspects of psychological knowledge to challenge assumptions and automatic ways of addressing and responding to students
  • Reflect upon and evaluate current interactive practices and learning resources
  • Apply learning to any individuals in any interactional situation
