Mishka Henner, shortlisted for this year's prestigious Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, will be giving a masterclass in Birmingham from 3 - 4 June 2013.
Known for his provocative works that re-purpose material found through the Internet, satellite imagery and the history of photography, Mishka will explore different approaches to image hacking.
In this two-day, practice oriented masterclass, Mishka will introduce participants to ways of working with online mapping tools a datasets, revealing the detailed processes behind his work.
In a special lecture Mishka will trace links back through the history of art and appropriation, isolating key historical figures, schools of thought and moments out of contex, and discussing issues and provocations of copyright, image sharing and simulation.
A further session will address the use of satellite imagery and drones and the impacts these have for contemporary life.
Participants will have access to a computer suite on day two, and will have the opportunity to create new work in dialogue with Mishka.
The masterclass is aimed at practicing artists and photographers as well as students reaching the end of their degree course, who are competent in Photoshop and interested in working more creatively with digital technologies.
The event will take place in the small lecture theatre and computer suite at the School of Visual Communication, Birmingham City University, Gosta Green Campus, Birmingham B4 7DX (approximately 15 minutes walk from Birmingham New Street Station).
Capacity is limited to 20 people, and advance booking is essential. Lunch will not be provided but tea and coffee will be available.
This event forms part of a photography research project led by Karen Newman and is presented in collaboration with the Library of Birmingham's GRAIN: Photography Hub Network and Birmingham City University.
