Feedback-

  • "I found the group sessions thought provoking and very well clarified and cemented by Bernie. Bernie demonstrated excellent knowledge and experience. I genuinely did not know what to expect! I found the discussions on structural implementations to be most valuable as well as the exercise on Privilege. The Training was a good balance of hearing Bernie's journey, then each section being questions, discussions, thought, group exercise and then Bernie's quantification and additional information made it a very valuable day!" Denyse Cazier, DEI Lead Admiral Insurance

  • "Our HR Team had a fantastic day sharing experiences and meeting other professionals. They were taken on a journey by Bernie Davies to understand how embedded in our mindsets are the things that separate us and how simple it is to reverse old ways of thinking ◀ They've taken away some great ideas, and we can't wait to show you what they do with them!" - Business in Focus

The Course Outline-

This course is based on my book Mastering Diversity- " We go Together or Not at All". It deep dives into the concepts I covered and is very Wales centric as my mission is to make a difference within the workplace is Wales first and foremost as Wales is my home.

We will learn about:

  • The main source of unconscious bias- storytelling and the impact on a community, the workplace and a nation
  • Groupthink and its historic impact on Wales as well as the current risks to it socio-economic development
  • Information Bubbles and Echo Chambers and how we polarise ourselves unwittingly and learn the tools to fix this within many contexts
  • An indepth look at various research, reports, legislation and policies that reveal shocking statistics and also instruct and guide us in making the UK and Wales a Fairer place to work and live, such as "Time to Change Report"- Aston University- 2022, The Alison Rose Review-2020,2022,2023, Alone Together Diversity and Entrepreneurship in the United Kingdom 2020- British Business Bank and more

ALLYSHIP

  • Who is responsible for allyship in organisations?
  • Identifying the barriers to effective allyship

I will take you through a journey understanding how embedded in our mindsets and in our lived experiences, are the things that separate us. I will also demonstrate how simple it is to reverse old ways of thinking and give tools to help us to start thinking as Allies.

I will give examples within the UK and Welsh context, demonstrate by way of key Reports and Research the barriers to true Allyship. I will be deep diving into several reports by Welsh universities, banks, and research centres which shed a light on the historic challenges in Wales, the progress we have made and the ways in which we can do better.

Being a female, Black lawyer in the corporate world threw up intersecting diversity and belonging factors. I will share my personal journey in this context with the view of enlightening the learners of their own “hidden” privilege (despite being in a minority grouping)

Together, we will discover how to counteract ways of thinking, being and recruiting to help us to transform our workplaces into a fair workspace for all.

Unpacking our personal privilege in and outside of work-

We will discuss some hard topics such as White privilege, unconscious bias and reveal the invisible "knapsack of privilege" some of us walk around with.

We will explore the Report "Running Against the Wind" March 2021
Women Together Network & Minority Ethnic Staff Network Report on Black Lives Matter & staff experiences of race, gender & intersectionality in the Welsh Government

There are practical group exercises to open our minds and help us to relate the course content to our everyday work experience and how we lead, manage and guide our teams. We will examine Privilege in:

Government Policies, Educational Institutions, Economic Disparities, Workplace Inequalities , Industry and Socio-economic matters

Learning about the inequities that impact people with less privilege at work-

We will look at workplace practices that separate and those that bring us together.

SECOND HALF-

Discovering what power we have to enact change at work

Learning specific actions to practice allyship - Deep Dive & GROUP WORK

Individual

W hat can you do as an individual to be a better Ally?

Interpersonal

How can you adapt your behaviours and interactions to become a better Ally to your team member?

NETWORKING TILL 5PM!

The module will be underpinned with the trainer’s first-hand experiences, having spent upwards of 21 years in the corporate sector and a further 10 years supporting corporate initiatives focused on Diversity and Belonging. Relevant case studies from her many years leading projects and serving within communities and networks, Chairing and sitting at a strategic level on Advisory Boards will be shared. We advise you continue meeting within small groups to explore new allyship strategies and practice filling out your own Active Allyship Framework. There will be practical exercises and takeaways within the workshop, which should hopefully inform how your teams serves your clients. It should also hopefully generally impact how we treat with Diversity and Belonging internally and the enlightened approach should affect other projects undertaken by the organisation as a whole.
