The British Council and Crafts Council present a salon conversation which explores materiality in contemporary craft, hosted by G.F Smith Show Space.
Chaired by Martina Margetts, Senior Tutor in Critical & Historical Studies at the Royal College of Art and a leading international specialist in craft, the panel will include two participants from the British Council’s recent New for Old craft research residencies in Southeast Asia (Magali An Berthon and Thao Vu) and makers selected by the Crafts Council (Zoe Bradley, Lee Borthwick).
Magali An Berthon is a PhD History of Design candidate at the Royal College of Art, exploring the revival of silk production in contemporary Cambodia as well as being a practicing reporter and textile designer with previous roles including fashion brand Kenzo.
Thao Vu is based in Vietnam where she teaches textile and fashion as well as running her own contemporary fashion brand Kilomet 109 which fuses traditional crafts and contemporary design, and employs local artisans.
Lee Borthwick is a Scots-born installation artist with a love of wild landscapes and sensitively gathered materials. Training first in textiles, she has been creating custom-made and site specific natural artworks for residential, commercial and exterior spaces from her North London workshop since 2009.
Zoe Bradley is a paper sculptor based in Wales. Trained as a fashion designer, she has created showpieces for designers from Alexander McQueen to Michiko Koshino. She works like a tailor and applies her artistry using the paper form and has recently incorporated digital technology in her paper practice too.
