Ensuring the integrity of engineering materials is fundamental to structural performance and reliability. This comprehensive training course equips engineers, researchers, and industry professionals with essential knowledge on mechanical properties, testing methods, and failure mechanisms, with a particular focus on metals.

This is an online course that will take place on 28th October 2025 as a one-day intensive session.

WHY ATTEND?

Understanding material behaviour under various mechanical loads and environmental conditions is crucial for optimising performance and preventing failures. This workshop delivers an in-depth exploration of material integrity, helping participants enhance their ability to assess and improve structural components in engineering applications.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

• Understand fundamental mechanical properties and their significance in engineering.
• Analyse various mechanical tests, including tensile, hardness, fracture toughness, and fatigue test.
• Interpret stress-strain relationships and failure mechanisms.
• Apply standard testing procedures for material performance assessment.
• Evaluate factors influencing material degradation and integrity.

COURSE CONTENT

This interactive workshop comprises 6 key modules:

Module 1: Fundamentals of Materials Integrity

• Key material properties and their role in structural applications.
• Importance of material selection.
• Concepts of stress, strain, and deformation.
• Basic force types: tensile, compressive, impact, and bending.

Module 2: Mechanical Testing of Materials

• Tensile Testing: Principles, significance, stress-strain curves, key material properties.
• Hardness Testing: Measurement methods (Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers), correlation to strength, practical applications.

Module 3: Fracture Mechanics and Toughness

• Introduction to fracture mechanics and stress concentration.
• Crack propagation, impact testing (Charpy), fracture toughness analysis (K, CTOD, J-integral).
• Standard testing methodologies.

Module 4: Fatigue Behaviour and Testing

• Understanding fatigue and its effects.
• Stress cycles, S-N curves, crack growth mechanisms.
• Testing methodologies and case studies.

Module 5: High-temperature Behaviour

• Mechanisms and material response.
• Curve analysis and testing methodologies.
• Case studies in high-temperature material failure.

Module 6: Advanced Materials and Future Trends

• Mechanical behaviour of composite materials.
• Applications of smart materials.
• Emerging trends in material integrity assessment.
• Industry best practices and sustainability.

ASSESSMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS

• Practical exercises in stress calculations and material selection.
• Failure analysis assignments and real-world case studies.
• Final assessment to evaluate understanding and application of key concepts.
