Event description

Mathematics and subject knowledge enhancement for Primary teachers

This Work Group aims to help primary teachers improve their knowledge of primary mathematics content (subject knowledge) with a particular emphasis on mathematical structures in key areas. Teachers will also develop their understanding of the background pedagogy (how children learn the maths) so that their teaching can be more effective. Approaches explored during the Work Group will be consistent with teaching for mastery. It will contribute to a national project, with participation across the Maths Hubs Network in England, which aims to refine and perfect an SKE improvement model that maximises effective teaching.

Who is this for?

Teachers in primary schools who want to develop their own understanding of mathematics, and want to learn more about mathematics pedagogy within a teaching for mastery context.

What is involved?

Four sessions over the spring term with gap tasks between them to embed learning.

Expectations of participants and their schools

Session 1: 30th January 2018 – Principles of Teaching for Mastery

Focus: variation, intelligent practice and developing conceptual understanding

Session 2: 27th February 2018 – Addition and Subtraction / Number Sense / Place Value

Focus: CPA approach, difference between conceptual and procedural variation as well as how best to support students to develop fluency

Session 3: 27th March 2018 – Multiplication and Division / Number Sense / Place Value

Focus: Using representation to expose mathematical structures, progression of conceptual understanding and links to fractions as an operation.

Session 4: 24th April 2018 – Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Focus: Fractions as number and operation; Part Part-Whole relationship (conceptual understanding) as well as equivalence and simplifying

Participants in this Work Group will be expected to contribute in facilitated discussions and complete work group gap tasks.

These four twilight sessions will be run from 4.30pm – 6:00pm Harris Academy Purley

(Please note: This Work Group will be initially limited to two places per school. If spaces are still available in the week leading up to the first session, we will make these additional spaces available to schools that have already signed up.)
