Matthias Enard’s latest novel, The Deserters (translated by Charlotte Mandell), lays bare the ravages of war on the most intimate aspects of life – and asks what remains of our selves in its wreckage. Joshua Cohen has aptly described Enard as ‘the composer of a discomposing age’. He will be reading from and in conversation about the novel with James Meek, contributing editor at the LRB, whose latest novel, Your Life Without Me, is forthcoming in 2026.
