Join us in this two-part webinar. During each session we will explore how to adapt questions so that the majority of your pupils progress at broadly the same pace through a lesson and block.

Adaptive teaching part 1 – arithmetic

In part 1, our focus will be on adaptation of arithmetic questions. Are some pupils simply ‘kept busy’ with pages of calculations, while you work with those who need extra support? How can we avoid this, so that all pupils are appropriately challenged?

We will look at a range of strategies to scaffold learning for pupils who may struggle, as well as to extend for pupils who grasp concepts more quickly, by providing thought-provoking activities, and in doing so allow all pupils to remain at the same part of the learning sequence. By encouraging thinking, your pupils will learn more and therefore remember more. Throughout the session, we will look at pupils’ work, to see the outcomes of adaptive teaching.

Adaptive teaching part 2 – problem solving

How can we adapt so that the majority of pupils progress at broadly the same pace when pupils are tackling problem solving activities? What strategies, approaches and representations are more powerful in enabling some pupils to access problems, and which work best for deepening other pupils’ understanding?

In part 2, we exemplify what adaptation looks like with a range of problem solving questions. We will consider how we can ensure pupils who may struggle have an avenue into the same questions as their peers, while providing opportunities for deepening thinking for others who grasp ideas more quickly. During the session, we will consider how pupils’ work demonstrates the outcomes of adaptive teaching.
