Understanding maths anxiety: What it is, how it works, and what we can do about it.
Dominic Petronzi is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Derby. He is also Deputy Director for Online Undergraduate Psychology, and a member of the University’s Mathematics Anxiety Research Group (MARG). His research focuses on understanding the development of maths anxiety, how it relates to educational experiences/career trajectories, and approaches to reduce it.
This session will look at the distinctiveness and impact of maths anxiety, the range of factors that are implicated in its emergence and maintenance and understanding the role of emotions and the cognitive effect. We’ll also consider how we can try and measure maths anxiety, as well as approaches to regulate attitudes and emotions about maths. The session will also provide an overview of some potential approaches to reduce maths anxiety or to help learners reengage with the subject.
