Event description

Description

The Department for Education has stated that the south Asian ‘mastery’ approach to teaching maths is set to become a standard fixture in England’s primary schools. It has recently approved Maths-No Problem! as the only recommended text book for teaching Maths Mastery. St Mary’s has been designated a Maths-No Problem! Model School, having taught using the Singapore Method since 2014. We use Maths-No Problem! From Years 1 through 6; however there is currently no published resource for the Early Years. This workshop explores how we prepare our children in our EYFS unit, using the principles of mastery ready for Year 1.

The Singapore approach is an exciting and effective way to teach maths through well established teaching methods and the use of carefully researched text books. Children are able to develop a love and deep understanding of the structure of maths that allows them to master maths. These sessions are led by Fiona Hagsharfi, Specialist Leader in Education (maths), Assistant Head and NCETM Mastery Specialist Lead.

This workshop is aimed at Maths Leads and EYFS practitioners who would like to find out more about the Singapore Maths approach, and how it can be adapted to the Early Years. No prior knowledge of Asian approaches is assumed in this workshop, and examples will be drawn from across mathematics.

This workshop includes:

- a demonstration of a Singapore maths lesson

- discussion with teachers and Early Years Lead

- presentation of the principles, progression and planning of early years maths

- opportunity to look at evidence of GLD (early years), our resources and examples of children’s work

Cost: £90 per delegate
