Event description

Description

Monday 14th October, 9:30-3, SOAS, University Of London

This training day, and freely available four-lesson unit of work, will support you to use a real data set from one of Europe’s largest academic research projects, along with a powerful visual story, to help your pupils critically engage with the realities of migration - through maths. Developed by teachers, and tested out in schools, this unit provides students with the opportunity to:

  • Apply statistics to authentic data and develop a stronger conceptual understanding

  • Explore a big data set, hugely beneficial in preparing students for A Level mathematics

  • Think critically about migration

  • Make links across the curriculum - with links to art, english, drama, and ICT

  • Use data to support an argument and experiment with novel ways to present data

The day will be co-facilitated by Jess Barnecutt, Assistant Head teacher at Oaklands School (and head of maths for 6 years), and Emily Oliver from not for profit PositiveNegatives - who make visual stories with academic data about humanitarian issues. Watch this video to find out more about this project.

Using this data, pupils will be able to explore the data to answer questions they’re interested in such as:

Who are the refugees?

Where are they from?

How old are they?

Are the married? Educated? Employed?

How did they get to Europe?
How long did it take, how did they travel, which route did they go?

Who did they travel with?

Did they bring their children?

Places are limited so please book to avoid disappointment.

A limited number of bursaries for £100 each are available for teachers from state schools, and will be released once the below conditions are fulfilled:

- teaching the class before christmas

- sending anonymous feedback including a survey to the organisers by 23rd December (to support ongoing research)

The data is from MEDMIG, led by Professor Heaven Crawley PhD. The North Star Fading animation is created by Karrie Fransman for PositiveNegatives.

This event has been generously funded by the Shine Trust and Coventry University.

Unfortunately the training is not in a fully accessible room. Whilst there will be a variety of vegetarian and vegan sandwiches available, we are not able to accommodate any further dietary requirements due to catering limitations.
