Tackling Maths Misconceptions: A Guide for Teaching Assistants
Please Note: You will need to attend both sessions (8th & 15th October, 5-6pm)
This 2 hour practical online course is designed to empower teaching assistants with the knowledge and strategies needed to identify and address common mathematical misconceptions in primary and secondary education.
Through interactive modules, real-world examples, and evidence-based techniques, participants will learn how to support pupils in overcoming misunderstandings in key areas such as number sense, fractions, place value, and problem-solving.
The course also includes guidance on effective questioning, scaffolding techniques, and using manipulatives to deepen conceptual understanding. Ideal for both new and experienced TAs, this course aims to build confidence and enhance classroom impact.
Worker Voice
Your course will be delivered by an expert tutor who will guide you and your fellow workers on a three-stage journey during your course:
- Issues – how does this issue affect you and your colleagues?
- Ideas – what would make things better for you and your colleagues?
- Involvement – how can you and your colleagues get involve in making positive changes in your workplace, including through your trade union?
You will take part in activities that capture your voice and we will communicate the outcomes anonymously to UNISON local branches, self-organised groups and sectoral forums. This means voice on the subject is heard at the heart of your union’s democratic structures.
