About this event
Dr Matthew Jebb, Director of the National Botanical Gardens, Dublin will give a fascinating illustrated talk on the work of botanist Matilda Cullen Knowles (1864 -1933) who came originally from the Cullybackey area in mid-Antrim.
Matilda Knowles is considered the founder of modern studies of Irish lichens. From 1923 she shared curatorship of the National Museum of Ireland herbarium – a collection of dried and pressed plants, now housed at the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin.
Matilda Knowles was never truly recognised in her lifetime as a curator of the National Herbarium, but her pioneering work in understanding the ecology of Lichens was a remarkable first.
This free webinar, which includes a post-talk Q&A session, is hosted by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.
The webinar is part of council’s Cultivating Change project to raise awareness of climate change, funded by Northern Ireland Museums Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
