Matinee Concert: A Celebration of John Ireland

A celebration of John Ireland’s rich musical legacy and a journey through works by Ireland, Handel, Strauss, Schubert, and Stanford. Today’s program brings together the talents of both young artists and members of the Jersey Chamber Orchestra in a captivating blend of song, piano solos, and chamber music.

The concert will include performances by three promising young singers, each bringing their unique interpretations to John Ireland’s songs. Savanna Vogt, Rubie Le Masurier, and Amelia Weber will perform Scapegoat, Spring Sorrow, and Down by the Salley Gardens. These lyrical gems reflect Ireland’s gift for setting poetry to music with emotional depth and charm.

Next, we feature Omara Silvester, one of Music in Action’s Young Artists. Her performance begins with Handel’s beautiful aria Ch’io mai vi possa, moves to Strauss’s serene Die Nacht, and culminates in Schubert’s Shepherd on the Rock. Accompanied by Jordi Juan-Perez on clarinet and Michael Wynne on piano, this piece highlights the poignant dialogue between voice and instruments, creating a moving centerpiece for this matinee.

Michael Wynne takes us further into Ireland’s world with two of his exquisite piano pieces, Island Spell and Holy Boy. These works, with their evocative melodies and tender expressiveness, offer a glimpse into Ireland’s reflective and deeply personal compositional style.

The highlight of the program is Ireland’s Clarinet Trio in D Major, performed by Jordi Juan-Perez (clarinet), Hannah Lewis (cello), and Michael Wynne (piano). The first movement, Allegro non troppo, is a delightful interplay of lyrical melodies and vibrant energy, showcasing the ensemble’s artistry and connection.

Jordi Juan-Perez and Michael Wynne perform Stanford’s Andante espressivo from his Three Intermezzi the This elegant and expressive work is a reflection on Stanford’s influence on a generation of British composers, including John Ireland.
