Cairn Building/Decorating by artist EsK
Join artist Esk (Stewart Knights) for a relaxed drop in session where we will get creative with rocks, stones and stories, building a community cairn in the IOU Studio.
Cairns are piles of stones seen on moors and mountains, made and used to help guide people, They also carry traces and stories of the people that built them.
In this hands-on workshop you will be invited to design and decorate a stone, either one we provide or one you bring from home, using colourful paints. Draw a picture, make a face or write a short poem on your stone, then choose to add it to the growing cairn or take it home.
Stewart, IOU’s Artist in Residence, has also created a series of cairn inspired art installations made from everyday recycled materials as a playful take on the stone cairns that feature on the South Pennine hills. You’ll find these in our Walkway Gallery - take a look and see what you can find hiding in these cairns.
