Event description

Description

We are very pleased to announce that our 2017 BioBlitz will be at Lee Bay, near Illfracombe, North Devon on the 22nd/23rd September. We invite participants with all levels of expertise and all ages to join us for a day of exciting activities ranging across all habitats.

The event will be run in partnership with North Devon Coast AONB and Coastwise North Devon. Coastal Creatures and the Lee BioBlitz is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Fullabrook CIC is also generously helping to fund the BioBlitz. More information about Lee Bay can be found here: www.leebay.co.uk

Lee Bay is set into a valley with abundant flora and fauna in woodlands, streams, rocky shore and cliffs which serves as an excellent lookout point for marine megafauna. As Lee Bay is tucked into a little nook on the North Devon coast we will be using the village hall as our base which is a 10 minute walk down to one of the most diverse rocky shores in the AONB.

Please contact events@MBA.ac.uk if you would like to join us for this exciting event to help record species and verify records in your field of expertise. We are also seeking enthusiasts to run timetabled activities throughout the event for the public as well as school activities.

There will also be space inside and outside the village hall at the base camp if you’d like a stand for your organisation to present to school groups and the general public.

If you would like to help run or support an activity or run a drop in activity or stand, please get in touch!

Camping information:

• FREE WILD CAMPING: Free wild camping is provided at Yomer Wood in Lee Bay. https://yomerwoodcamping.com/ This is a 10-15 minute walk from the village hall which is uphill on a track into the woodland where you can pitch your tent/sling your hammock wherever you please! There are compost loos and a freshwater spring to wash. There is no parking available here so you will need to leave your car in the village hall car park and walk up the road with your gear (it is possible to drop off gear on the roadside next to the camping and then park your vehicle). For those who do not want to pitch tents then they can stay in a large semi-permanent tent (sleeps 8-10 people in sleeping bags) or a field classroom (sleeps 2 people on futons). A good option for the more active! No booking required, just turn up and pitch your tent, we have booked the whole site.

• OTHER CAMPING OPTION: If you want to camp near flushing loos and showers and a guaranteed flat grassy pitch then camping is available at Lower Campscott Farm http://www.lowercampscott.co.uk/green-camping This is just above the wild camping spot at Yomer Wood and a further 5 minute walk across a field (20 minute walk in total). There is a large car park available here. There are no electricity hook ups here. A single pitch is £14 per night. Please book using the website. If you are staying here and driving down to Lee, please try and car pool with other people attending the BioBlitz. For those who want to carpool to save on limited parking space at Lee then you are welcome to park your cars at Lower Campscott Farm and either walk down or drive down in fewer cars.

• OTHER CAMPING OPTION (MEMBERS ONLY): For further camping and caravanning then there is https://www.leemeadowcamping.co.uk/ which has toilets, showers, a farm shop, electricity hook ups and is a very large site. Please note that this is a members only site for the Camping and Caravan Club. Pitches start at £15 per night. This is a 10 minute drive from the village hall and a 45 minute walk. Please book using the website.

• CAMPERVANS: Campervans are welcome to park at the beach car park for free (toilets are available 24-hours a day and are a short walk away from the beach car park but no showers or electricity are available). Unfortunately camping and campervans are not allowed at the village hall.

• OTHER ACCOMODATION: For other accommodation please contact www.woolacombetourism.co.uk or www.visitilfracombe.co.uk
