RETHINKING THE MUSEUM WITH GUARANI & KAIOWA COMMUNITIES | PANEL EVENT

About this event

How can the museum be reimagined from the perspective of Guarani and Kaiowá indigenous communities in Brazil? This event presents the Guarani and Kaiowá Digital Archive project and introduces the people who compose this global interdisciplinary collaboration between Guarani and Kaiowá communities, the Institute for the Development of Art and Culture (IDAC), and the UCL Multimedia Anthropology Lab. Supported by the British Museum’s Endangered Material Knowledge Programme (2021), UCL Grand Challenges (2021) and the UCL Centre for Critical Heritage Studies (2022), this project engages with current global debates on the role of the museum and archival collections in contemporary times, and invites Guarani and Kaiowá communities to rethink the methods, techniques, and social relations through which museums are made and used.

This hybrid event will take place both online and at the Museum of Image and Sound in Campo Grande, Brazil, where an exhibition of selected components of the Guarani and Kaiowá Digital Archive has been on display since May 2022. This panel draws together the researchers, community members, multimedia artists and cultural institutions who have brought this global collaboration into being. Contributors will introduce the project’s participative approach and situate it within contemporary debates in critical heritage and museum studies, challenging the historical exclusion of local communities from the curation and narration of their cultural heritage and the imagination of our collective futures.
