Event description

Work Experience in Construction – Overcoming the Barriers

1:15 pm Registration

1:30 pm Workshop starts

For Construction employers, FE and HE providers and secondary schools

The Need

Students need to experience the world of work

Schools, colleges and universities need placements for their students

Employers need to attract new talent.

However, providing meaningful work experience in construction can be challenging, with many barriers.

Purpose of the Workshop

This workshop is an opportunity for all involved to explore the barriers and discuss practical solutions. Organisations responsible for arranging work experience will have the opportunity to explain their requirements. We’ll also hear examples of effective work experience.

Gloucestershire College and other providers would like to know what is the best time of year for students to gain meaningful work experience and qualifications they may require. They also wish to hear about the barriers currently facing the construction industry in providing work placements for students.

Who should attend?

Construction employers: anyone responsible for developing the talent pipeline for all areas of their business, including managers, supervisors, team leaders, HR and training officers and mentors.

This is an opportunity to express your concerns about providing work experience and find solutions, and to explain what works best for you, such as time of year, duration of placements, types of student who gain the most etc. You will also hear about the support available from colleges and universities and build working relationships with them.

Education Providers

This event will explore both site-based and office-based work experience so you do not need to be a construction training provider to benefit from attending this event. Construction offers a fantastic range of jobs, from geologists to drone pilots, so this is not just about the traditional trades.

FE colleges: Explain what your students need and the support you provide to help employers overcome the barriers to providing work experience.

Schools: Share your requirements and explain the support available. This is also an opportunity to provide an update about the work experience T-Level students will require.

HE providers: Explain the needs of degree students and the range of placements and projects required.

What are the barriers to work experience in construction?

- Health and safety requirements

- Management and supervision - a ‘drain on resources’

- CSCS cards

- Insurance

- Timing, duration and frequency

- Unstructured, not meaningful

- Poor previous experience

- Do clients restrict opportunities for under 18s?

- What else?

How can these barriers be overcome? How can we make work experience in construction meaningful?

- Use a project-based approach?

- Create safe zones?

- Additional supervision by the provider?

- Financial help with insurance?

- Streamlining the paperwork?

What else can we do to remove the barriers to work experience?

Come and join in the conversation.
