Meanwhile Use – Workshops 2

Loughborough Junction, Location TBC, 19th June, 18.00 – 20.00

The project aims to create opportunities for people between the derelict and underused areas in Loughborough Junction. It will seek out empty or underused spaces and make deals with individual landlords and Network Rail to open them. The aim is to inspire people to use them to improve their own lives and those of the wider community. The project will utilise vacant space in Loughborough Junction as a resource for employment opportunities and supporting people to create and develop their own jobs at all levels of formality. The project provides seed funding to leverage space in order to catalyse meanwhile uses in the area, increasing skills and building capacity. Crucially, it will work with Lambeth Council, Network Rail and other stakeholders to test uses and guide strategic decisions that may inform future regeneration of the area.

Meanwhile Space will collaborate with local people to create something that can build on momentum already initiated by JP Morgan Foundation's (JPMF) charitable work in the area. Over 24 months, it will create a catalyst for meanwhile activity and the components to create the right structure to make that activity sustainable over the next 5+ years.

The Workshops

Meanwhile Space invite key individuals and organisations from Loughborough Junction to a short workshop on meanwhile uses. The idea of the workshop is for participants to start understanding and thinking about possible implications of meanwhile, how the project may impact them and how they might help users of spaces to achieve the greatest impacts possible from this regeneration project.

What we want to achieve:

  • To enthuse and inform in meanwhile use as part of a wider long term strategy for the area
  • Explain the benefits of short-term small-scale uses. How they can benefit the community, economy and sustainability of the area and compliment long term larger scale regeneration.
  • Direct ways for individual and organisations to influence and support meanwhile activities, and subsequently share the messages with other colleagues.
  • Identify the challenges and barriers that exist for individuals, startups and community uses of empty spaces, and ways that they as local partners can help reduce the barriers.

Key outcomes you can expect:

1. An understanding of the concept and benefits of meanwhile (with real-life examples) and to generate awareness, enthusiasm, support!

2. For participants to understand the impact of meanwhile use on a community and an area

3. For participants to be aware:

  • how they may be able to ‘help’ users of spaces, and connect them to existing services in the area
  • what can be expected of meanwhile uses in Loughborough Junction and vice versa in terms of council processes and once in operation
