‘Influence’ is a key measure of a member state’s effectiveness within the collective decision making of the EU, but ‘influence’ is an elusive commodity which can be hard to measure. As the EU’s ‘awkward customer’, does Britain materially damage its national interests or is Britain’s track record as an EU agenda-setter more creditable than it is often given credit for? A panel of experts will debate the issue.
Stephen Booth is Co-Director at Open Europe. While at Open Europe he has written on EU regulation, justice and home affairs and EU aid policy. Stephen holds an undergraduate degree in political science and was awarded the Jean Monnet Prize for his master's degree in European studies from the University of Sussex. Stephen's professional interests include democracy and transparency in the EU, the interaction between domestic and EU law and European cooperation in crime and policing.
Lucy Thomas was appointed Campaign Director of BNE in January 2014. A former journalist, Lucy has covered EU news on a range of BBC programmes such as Newsnight and Radio 4’s the World at One. She was based in Brussels for four years as the producer of the weekly EU news programme, The Record Europe, during which time the programme won the European Parliament Prize for Journalism.
Peter Wilding is the founder and director of British Influence. In 20 years of working in European affairs he has practised and lectured as a solicitor in EU law, been head of media for the Conservative Party in the European Parliament, and European Director of BskyB. He has made regular appearances in the media and has authoredInfluencing the European Union (Thorogood, 1997).
