This workshop will cover best practices in terms of ballistic/high speed impact testing, and metamaterial development in this area.

About this event

Following on from the workshop on Mechanical Metamaterials for sporting impacts, we are delighted to announce an exciting group of presenters considering high energy/high speed impacts. This time, we will have three speakers – covering best practices in terms of ballistic/high speed impact testing, and metamaterial development in this area.

The workshop will be held on Wednesday 8th December, from 2-3 pm (GMT) via Zoom (you will receive this link after registration). Following each 15-minute presentation there will be 5 minutes for questions. But – we hope to encourage discussion and collaboration amongst speakers and attendees after the short workshop. So – we will share discussion threads for each presentation via @MetamaterialsUK on Twitter, and on LinkedIn.

The Presenters are:

Dr Richard Critchley of Cranfield University. Dr Critchley’s research concerns the development and characterisation of materials for protective equipment for the defence sector – including auxetic materials. He will be presenting about the state of the art and best practices in terms of highspeed impact/ballistic material testing at Cranfield University.

Dr Zafer Kazanci of Queen’s University Belfast. Dr Kazancı’s research concerns the simulation, development and characterisation of sandwich panels incorporating auxetic materials – with broad application spanning defence and aerospace. He will be presenting on “Impact and crushing investigation of industrial applications utilising auxetic core”.

Prof Zoran Ren of the University or Maribor leads a prolific research group, whose work includes development, simulation, and characterisation of cellular materials under blast and highspeed/ballistic impacts. Prof Ren is an expert in complex computer modelling and simulations, high-performance calculations, modelling of fast transients in solids, machine elements construction as well as development and characterisation of cellular metamaterials. He will be presenting on “Impact behaviour of auxetic metamaterials”.
