Event description

Description

There are two somewhat contrasting themes for this month’s branch meeting.

At the Online Media Awards on 1 June, which was attended by members of the branch representing the NUJ, Al Jazeera was celebrated as they won the two two awards and a number of others. At the same time, a huge political split in the Middle East led to bans on Al Jazeera in the region and the closure of their Riyadh bureau.

This branch meeting is going to deal with both issues. At the meeting itself, we hope to have a discussion about what’s going on in the Middle East and what this means for UK-based media companies that are either Middle East-owned or focus on covering the region.

We’ll also deal with the usual branch business – new members, etc.

Then, around 8pm, we shall retire upstairs to The Chapel, the NUJ’s cafe bar, to celebrate the successes of NUJ members at the Online Media Awards. Not just Al Jazeera, winners also included Channel 4 News, The Guardian, the BBC, CNN, the Independent, IBTimes, Middle East Eye and Carbon Brief.

If you can’t make the meeting part, please join us in the bar for the celebration.

Tea and coffee will be provided at the meeting.
