Media Law Intensive – 2-day

 

Tutor: Dan Lee

 

This intensive, two-day, interactive course will familiarise you with media law, codes and ethics relevant to England and Wales to enable you to gather and publish compelling content while avoiding legal actions and regulatory complaints.

The course covers publication in any form, including social media.

You will learn how recent court and regulator decisions pose risks and offer opportunities for your work. You will have the opportunity to discuss your work in the context of the law and codes and the dynamic worlds of media and publishing.

• Best practice

• Public interest and other key concepts

• Subterfuge and other investigation techniques

• Negligent misstatement

• Defamation

• Malicious falsehood

• Breach of confidence and privacy, including whistle-blowers

• Children and the law

• Contempt and other court issues (in brief – see note below)

• Information control, including freedom of information

• Intellectual property, including copyright

• Image use and using material from other outlets

 

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course you should:

• Understand the application of the law and codes

• Identify both risks and opportunities

• Know and understand the latest law, codes and practice

 

Who Should Attend

Writers, journalists, bloggers and anyone publishing text, video, audio or any other content online, in print or for broadcast media.

About the tutor

Dan Lee has been a journalist since 1989. In addition, he has been an editorial consultant, media coach, and academic since the late noughties. He works for numerous organisations, including Channel 4, Chemical Watch, Evening Standard, Health Service Journal, The Guardian, The Independent, the NCTJ and The Times. As well as writing, reporting and editing, Dan advises media organisations, such as the Evening Standard, on pre-publication legal and ethical issues, from defamation to breach of confidence and copyright. He has extensive experience of teaching on, designing and leading undergraduate, postgraduate and professional courses for Birkbeck, University of London, the NCTJ, and various industry trainers and other organisations.
