A Place at the Table: A report on young people’s participation in resolving disputes about special educational needs and disabilities, by Margaret Doyle

Date: Tuesday, 4 June 2019

from 2.30pm to 5pm, followed by a drinks reception 5-6pm

Venue: Garden Court Chambers,

57-60 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, WC2A 3LJ

The launch is supported by Garden Court Chambers and 39 Essex Chambers, with support in kind from the University of Essex.

Mediation in the Court of Protection reports on a research survey of mediation use in the Court of Protection carried out in 2017. The research findings and case studies have helped to shape the proposals for an evaluated Court of Protection mediation scheme to be launched in 2019. Information about fourteen case studies and the mediation scheme pertinent to Local Authorities and their legal teams will be shared, giving information on a range of situations where mediation has been used.

A Place at the Table reports on a knowledge exchange project exploring the rights of young people in relation to appealing decisions made by local authorities on support for special educational needs and disabilities. It highlights the increase in SEND mediations since 2014 and the specific issue of decision-making participation in mediation. It was funded by the University of Essex Impact Acceleration Account and Garden Court Chambers Special Fund, with support in kind from KIDS, a national charity working with families with disabled children.

The launch will be chaired by Helen Curtis, barrister and mediator at Garden Court Chambers. Speakers include:

  • Katie Scott, barrister and mediator, 39 Essex Street Chambers

  • Maurice Sunkin Hon QC, Professor of Public Law at the University of Essex

  • Denzil Lush, former Senior Judge of the Court of Protection

Places are limited and available on a first come, first served basis. Please RSVP by 1 May 2019.
