Event description
Supporting Clergy and those in Parish Leadership to Communicate Effectively and Nip Conflict in the Bud

About this Event

This practical two hour workshop is designed to support you to get to the heart of issues effectively, nip disagreements in the bud and foster a culture of greater collaboration during a time that is ripe with obstacles and potential misunderstandings.

The tried and tested ideas and tools we will explore are drawn from the toolkits of mediators, reconcilers and facilitators.

These will support you to:

  • Manage communication constructively
  • Build consensus on key decision making
  • Manage unconstructive behaviours from strangers to trusted members of the community
  • Support people who are experiencing stress and fear to feel heard and acknowledged
  • Guide your community through challenging topical issues

We will learn together through direct instruction, open discussions and Q&A that utilise real-world examples, as well as practising skills in small groups

Benefits of Taking Part

  • Develop greater confidence in your ability to use proven communication tools effectively
  • Nip issues in the bud to enable you to focus on your core ministry causes
  • Support your communities to better manage church reopening and strengthening the social fabric during this time of uncertainty

What’s the Need?

Clergy and those in positions of responsibility face numerous challenges: reopening church buildings under government restrictions, providing pastoral support to parishioners experiencing stress and facilitating postponed annual parochial meetings, to name but a few.

Underlying each of these - every initiative and decision - is a web of human relationships that needs to be continually invested in.

Managing these relationships successfully often depends on effective communication skills, especially in those difficult moments.

Learning Objectives

  • To better utilise effective communication tools
  • To reflect on your approaches, strengths and weaknesses to communicating in the course of ministry
  • To draw nourishment, insight and ideas from fellow participants
  • To better understand and relate to the underlying, often hidden needs of those we seek to communicate with

Examples of Content We’ll Focus On

  • Modelling constructive behaviour so as to incentivise this in others
  • Asking calibrated and open questions so as to access more quality insight
  • Supporting others to moderate and recognise limits of their own knowledge – thus helping you to get your point across
  • Transitioning from thinking to feeling, and thus encouraging others to become more open to the feelings and needs of others
  • Identifying needs through succinct reframing
  • Engaging constructively with people who hold very different beliefs and opinions
