Description

The influence of mediation as the number one tool for dealing with disputes is growing all the time. The skills a mediator uses to facilitate the resolution of disputes are transferable across business in general and can be applied in a wide range of personal and business situations.

This certified course provides participants with the opportunity to acquire and develop the skills used by a mediator in order to understand how to avoid or resolve conflict. Successful completion of the programme leads to certification as an Accredited Civil & Commercial Mediator in accordance with the requirements of the UK Civil Mediation Council (CMC).

Course Objectives
Participants will receive training and practice their skills via role plays and class exercises.

Learning will include:

Introductions to (a) Mediation and the law relating to it (b) the theory of conflict and (c) the psychology of conflict within the context of mediation

Understanding the role of the mediator

Learning, developing and applying skills required by a mediator including but not limited to communications, relationship and negotiation skills | How to create value when creating the deal

Understanding the impact of GDPR on the role of a mediator

Course Outcomes

  • Delegates will be able to demonstrate that they have:

    • A rounded view of the world of ADR

    • Understood the role of the mediator in a civil and commercial context

    • Understood the role of the mediator in facilitating communications between the parties

    • Acquired the basic knowledge and skills a mediator needs and will be able to demonstrate their application of those skills in an assessed environment

Those delegates who do not wish to become an accredited mediator may attend days 1, 2 and 3 only and receive the Certificate in Mediation.

Your trainers

Gregory Hunt is the Founder & Manager Director of Hunt ADR Limited. He was a customer service trainer in the UK Civil Service for three years before he started his career in ADR in 1995. Since then he has regularly provided one-day training and awareness programmes in the UK, Europe, the US and the Far East. Since 2017 he has trained professionals with an interest in mediaiton in in the UK, Spain and Poland. He first trained as a mediator with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) in 2001, and retrained with CEDR in 2008. In 2017 he qualified as a mediator skills trainer with ADR-ODR International. He is a Member of the CIArb under its mediation and arbitration routes. He is a Civil Mediation Council Registered Mediator and is found on a number of prominent mediator panels. Gregory holds a 2:1 BA (Hons) in Business Administration from The University of Humberside; the Advanced Certificate in Administrative Management from The Institute of Administrative Management and the Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing. He was a Chartered Marketer for more than a decade. He also holds a Certificate in Business Administration and is a member of The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and The Federation of Small Businesses.

Sharon Crooks has delivered training and run workshops in corporate and not for profit organisations including Sony, FACT, Hitachi, Connect, FDF, CIPFA, NFU and IA SB for more than 15 years, specialising in leadership, team performance and behavioural effectiveness. She has volunteered as a Tutor on an accredited Restorative Justice and Victim Awareness course at HMP Brixton since 2012. In 2017 she delivered accredited mediator skills training to BAR students at Manchester Metropolitan University and BPP Law School. Sharon trained as a Civil & Commercial mediator with ADR Group and is a Civil Mediation Council Registered Mediator. She completed her MA in HR in 1991 and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Civil Mediation Council. Sharon is an ADR-ODR International Accredited Mediator Skills Trainer, and holds an adult education PTTLs certificate.

John Jarrett has over 25 years’ experience in management consultancy, training and interim management specialising in all areas of customer relationship management, stakeholder engagement and managing a service organisation. He has a proven track record in the development of training, development and culture change programmes. Previous to his present role his experience includes 16 years delivering service to customers in a wide range of roles. John is currently working as a management consultant at a ‘Magic Circle’ law firm. Responsibilities include managing a service delivery team, reviewing current service delivery processes, and introducing new methods of service delivery. He regularly works as an interim manager and advises organisation on service improvement. Other clients have included IBM UK (Customer Care manager 1991-1994 reporting directly to the board of directors) and Panasonic UK (reporting to the CEO). He is exceptionally experienced in the design, development and running of large stakeholder engagement development programmes (200 – 2,000+ delegates) and has vast international experience in over 20 countries across Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia. John has wide experience in all areas of business, private, public and third sector, he is a practised coach and mentor of those involved in change and an experienced ‘mystery shopper’. John is an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual and strong team player, an excellent communicator at all levels, able to motivate and inspire loyalty, to fit in any organisation and sector. With great relevance to mediator skills training, John is an innovator who believes in finding a way.

Nigel Frost is Consultant Lawyer at Keystone Law and a highly experienced civil and commercial mediator with Clerksroom. Nigel is an established Elite Mediator and Business and Property Court Lawyer. He heads Dispute Resolution, Construction and Insolvency Department working daily with ADR and the Court System. Nigel mediates extensively, with a very high success rate and has the Experience to open doors to settlement and deal robustly with life changing cases. As a Managing Director Nigel is used to managing conflict with an in depth knowledge of business - not just legally but practically. He is also an avid Hackney carriage operator and driver - a perfect place to hone mediation skills! He is often instructed on high profile multi party mediations as one of the UK's consistently highest rated mediators, and is just as happy dealing with more modest cases that are just as important to the parties.
