Description

Neurodegeneration: now clinically tractable?

Thursday 7 November 2019, 14:30 - 19:00, The Francis Crick Institute, London

Our new Medicine at the Crick event series showcases major advances in biomedical science and raises awareness of the medical implications of major scientific advances. Interested members of the Crick and wider UK biomedical community are invited to attend. Members of the academic medical press are also invited. Each event comprises a series of talks and a panel discussion.

Our fifth event in the series, Neurodegeneration: now clinically tractable?, will be hosted by Prof Rickie Patani and Dr Sonia Gandhi (The Francis Crick Institute/UCL).

Neurodegenerative diseases, caused by the inexorable loss of neurons in the human nervous system, are currently incurable and devastating (e.g. Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease and Motor Neuron Disease (ALS)). Emerging concepts in aging, mitochondrial biology, proteostasis, and RNA regulation hold the promise of pathogenic mechanisms that are therapeutically targetable. This meeting highlights the latest developments in these fields, and addresses whether they can be effectively harnessed for future therapies. Speakers include Prof Dame Linda Partridge (UCL), Prof Karen Duff (Columbia University), Prof Francesco Muntoni (UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health) and Prof Sir Doug Turnbull (Newcastle University).

This event has been approved by the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom for 3 category 1 (external) CPD credits.
