Event description

Description

Once again Leeds Civic Trust is running its popular series of early evening walks, each themed around a particular period in Leeds' history and architecture. Before we set off on the walk people are invited to gather informally over a finger buffet consisting of sandwiches, hot & cold savoury snacks, cakes & fruit and wine, beer and soft drinks. Ideal for a fun, sociable and informative spring evening in the company of friends old and new, or with your work colleagues after a hard day's toil!

New for 2019: new Tour Guide system with individual receivers for each walker: hear comfortably at your chosen volume and overcome background noise and distance from guide. Use your own headphones if you prefer - any 3.5mm jack will fit.

MEDIEVAL LEEDS

Today, Briggate (literally gate to the bridge) is the one of the main shopping streets in Leeds, but more importantly it is a medieval survivor of the beginnings of the centre of Leeds, along with Kirkgate which leads to Leeds Minster (which had a presence on this site from very early times). This walk will highlight the locations of the Manor House, Corn Mill and other vestiges of Medieval Leeds – including our medieval boundaries (marked by Bar Stones – and now a complete set of Leeds Civic Trust Blue Plaques). A walk describing the earliest beginnings of Leeds.

Timings:

  • Arrival from 5.45pm
  • Food is served at 6.00pm
  • Trust Bookshop open for browsing and to make purchases from 5.45pm - 6.30pm
  • Walk starts at 6.30pm (usually there are two groups, so start time may be slightly staggered)
  • Walk lasts c. 1.5 hours (i.e. finish c. 8.30 / 9.00 pm)
  • Walks finish at a central location in Leeds city centre (depending on the walk theme: in the Briggate, Vicar Lane, Headrow, Kirkgate area) from where you can make your way back to your cars, or major public transport arteries - or indeed, to restaurants, bars or pubs for further refreshments and socialising)

NOTES:

Food consists of a finger-buffet with plenty of vegetarian options. If you have specific dietary requirements please notify us when booking.

The distance covered is moderate but you will need to be prepared for frequent stops at points of interest along the route.

Important: The Trust premises will be closed when you return from the walk, so please make sure you take all your belongings and shop purchases with you when you set off for the walk.
