Creative Derbyshire presents
Meet the Curator 2013
Thursday 19 September, 10.00am – 4.00pm
QUAD, Market Place, Cathedral Quarter, Derby, DE1 3AS
Meet the Curator is a unique event bringing together curators, programmers and buyers with artists and makers from across Derbyshire. It is an opportunity for new and emerging artists to meet gallery curators face-to-face for advice and guidance on how to get work selected for exhibitions, commissions and retail.
Background to the event
The first Meet the Curator event in 2012 was developed as a result of our research into where artists and creative businesses said they most needed help and support. An overwhelming number of artists said “more access to opportunities to showcase and sell work” was a priority. As a response to this, we organised the first Meet the Curator in May last year in order to support new creative talent. Over 100 artists attended on the day with representation from 20 galleries, venues, festivals and commercial retailers. The event was an overwhelming success, providing a platform for many artists to get greater exposure and helping them to develop their practice and grow their businesses.
Format of the event
Meet the Curator is an opportunity for artists to drop in and visit a range of exhibitions stands from galleries, arts organisations, venues etc. Artists will get to speak to galleries/buyers face-to-face about what they are looking for and how to get selected for exhibition or sales opportunities.
The day is split into two identical sessions – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Artists are asked to book onto one of these sessions via Eventbrite. You may drop in at any time during the session you have booked for.
The galleries, venues and festivals exhibiting at the event include:
- Banks Mills Studios, Derby
- The Beetroot Tree, Draycott
- The Brewhouse Gallery, Burton-on-Trent

Preparing for the event
For an artist, making the first approach to a gallery or an arts organisation can be a daunting prospect, which is why Creative Derbyshire is bringing together artists with the people that have the power to promote artists’ work. We are also putting together a specialist training workshop prior to Meet the Curator which will assist artists in preparing their approach and ‘pitch’ for the day as well as giving them useful tips and ideas on how to be considered for exhibitions, sales and commissioning opportunities. We are offering 2 dates for the training workshop - ‘Prepare your approach to Galleries’: Friday 6 September (Ripley) and Monday 9 September (Matlock). For further details and registration, please visit http://creativederbyshire.eventbrite.com/. The workshop will be led by Rachael Chambers of Ferrers Gallery/Contemporary Craft Editor ofCraft&Design magazine.
The event will take place in The Box at QUAD, Derby. For location and parking details please visit http://www.derbyquad.co.uk/contact-us. Free tea and coffee will be available for attendees. Lunch will not be provided but you can visit QUAD's Café Bar and choose from a range of delicious home made dishes.
The nearest car park is the multi-storey Assembly Rooms, otherwise Chapel Street car park or Parksafe on Bold Lane: http://en.parkopedia.co.uk/parking/carpark/assembly_rooms/de1/derby/
The event is FREE for all taking part. The day is split into two identical sessions – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Please book onto only one of these sessions. You may drop in at any time during the session you have booked for.
Once booked on to the event, you will receive further information and a full list of all participating galleries and organisations in advance of the event to help you prepare for the day.
