Meet Saif Bonar, founder of Matthews Yard, a mixed model space on the high street in Croydon, London. Find out about how a combination of workspace, café, arts, and community come together well, and new ways to crowd fund shared spaces.
The story so far...
Matthews Yard was opened by local resident and entrepreneur, Saif Bonar, who wanted to see more variety and activity on his local high street. It includes a co-working space and café, and hosts events and activities including a local makers market and Trade School Croydon (an open learning space where people exchange resources, advice or items for new knowledge).
They have just successfully crowd-funded for the UKʼs first new independent theatre and cinema, and put their success as a new high street hub down to their mixed model of community and enterprise, where not everything is immediately commercialised and there is a sense of shared ownership.
Could this work in Sidcup?
This type of collaborative space is good if you want to develop your ideas in a space filled with people and activities.
Working and socialising in stimulating environments can be a great way to cultivate and test projects, whether they are social, commercial or a mix of both. Sharing resources and having a space to bring people together creates good conditions for collaboration - leading to both social projects and businesses.
When & Where
The Discovery Incubator
The Discovery Incubator, 9-11 Sidcup High Street
The Discovery Incubator is the high street HQ of In Store For Sidcup. It is a place to be inspired, map opportunities and find support for new ventures.
Sidcup is full of people with skills and resources, aspirations and ideas that could be brought to life on the high street. Are you thinking about starting up something new? Have you already begun? Are you involved in activities nearby?
We are exploring new ways that shopkeepers, residents, local organisations and entrepreneurs can work more closely together and create opportunities that support high street activity.
And we are researching what sort of space will offer those starting and growing enterprises a supportive and learning environment.
