Matugga Distillers is a Scottish rum producer founded by husband and wife team Paul and Jacine Rutasikwa. Established in 2018, the distillery is located in Livingston, Scotland, and is renowned for its unique approach to rum-making, blending African heritage with Scottish distilling traditions. Paul, born in Uganda, and Jacine, with Jamaican roots, combine their diverse backgrounds to create a range of multi-award-winning rums.
Matugga's portfolio includes:
- Matugga Golden Rum: A gourmet pure single rum matured in ex-bourbon casks, offering tropical and wood spice notes with a smoky finish.
- Matugga Spiced Rum: Infused with a masala chai blend of black tea, fresh ginger, and spices, reflecting the couple's African heritage.
- Matugga White Rum: A white rum with a fruity and funky tropical notes with some creaminess.
On 11th August, 2025, Matugga Distillers will host a "Meet the Maker" event at Bonnie & Wild in Edinburgh. Attendees will have the opportunity to:
- Learn about Matugga's origins, the fusion of African and Scottish influences, and their commitment to quality and innovation in rum production.
- Sample a selection of Matugga's rums, including the flagship Golden Rum and the aromatic Spiced Rum.
- Engage with a representative from Matugga Distillers, gaining insights into their unique distillation process and future plans, such as developing a sugarcane plantation in Uganda to become a "Cane to Cask" producer.
