Event Details

A World Café style event for CIPD members to get to understand the strengths of the talent pool of former service personnel. Organisations will learn how to access up to three months of free internships for current serving personnel and understand the benefits and support available for people transitioning into civilian life.

Three sessions will cover separate topics with a short presentation, followed by a facilitated discussion on each table.

Session 1: Values and Characteristics, facilitated by John Carbis, Chelsea Pensioner

This session seeks to explore the values, characteristics and competencies of ex-service men and women and explode the myths created by unconscious bias.  What are their strengths?  What value can they bring to an organisation?

Session 2: Employment Realities, facilitated by Michelle Claridge

Michelle will introduce the results of her research around transitioning service personnel and the realities of recruiting and on boarding.

Session 3: First Steps to Employment, facilitated by Michael Gilbert, Regional Employer Relationship Manager and Elly Cooper, Regional Manager South West, of Career Transition Partnership

This session explores the benefits and support available to organisations that employ ex-service personnel and identifies how to access up to three months of free internship.

Fiona Galbraith
Commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1995, Fiona has served on operations in Bosnia, Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan. Her most rewarding post was commanding a battalion of 320 intelligence specialists through a period of intense change, whilst supporting multiple operational deployments across the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

Recently returned from working in the United State headquarters responsible for American interests in Africa, she is enrolled on a full-time MSc at the Royal Agricultural University from October 2017 as the first step in her second career.

John Carbis

John is a Cornishman, who served in the Royal Engineers from 1947 to 1970, training as an Architectural Draughtsman and Military Clerk of Works.

On leaving the forces, he continued as a Clerk of Works for NatWest, leaving to take up the position of Contracts Administrator with the Ellis Williams Partnership. He later worked in the Middle East as an Engineer, Property Manager and Clerk of Works, before returning to the UK to establish his own site inspection consultancy.

In 1997, he was accepted as an In-Pensioner of the Royal Hospital at Chelsea where he was gainfully employed for five years in the Surveyor of Works Department. He still keeps busy with projects ranging from genealogy, to education in support of the Royal Engineers and wider Army community.

Michael Gilbert and Elly Cooper, Career Transition Partnership

The Career Transition Partnership (CTP) is the Ministry of Defence working with Right Management.  CTP is the official provider of Armed Forces resettlement, supporting ex-service personnel with resettlement support, career transition advice and training opportunities.
