Over five days in March (1st - 5th) GMCA's Meet Your Future will be offering a series of virtual events for young people, to discover how the curriculum links to careers here in Greater Manchester.
National Careers Week (1st - 5th March) - Programme
Mon 1st March
- Good Morning Greater Manchester with Andy Burnham - 09.00 - 09.15 - Andy Burnham was elected as Mayor of Greater Manchester in May 2017. Prior to this Andy was MP for Leigh from 2001. In government, Andy has held Ministerial positions at the Home Office, Department of Health and the Treasury. Join Andy as he speaks about his own Career journey as well as the wealth of opportunities available for Greater Manchester Young People.
- Start your software engineering journey with a Degree Apprenticeship -11.00 - 11.45 - Hear about the latest career opportunities from a Manchester-based software and services company with 20 years’ experience in providing cutting edge, enterprise technology solutions. Subject areas: Computing
- Manufacturing in the Defence Industry - 12.00 - 12.45 - This session will give an insight into the different products (missile systems) that MBDA make, how we manufacture our missiles and how the company works. Subject areas: Engineering, Math, Physics, Product Design.
- Learn about Urban Architecture - 13.00 - 13.45 - Want to know more about design, architecture and urban planning? In this session Caleb Jones and Andy Roberts from Plan-it.ie will show you how careers in design can be much more than you think. Subject areas: Geography, Art and Design/Drawing, English, Science/biology, Maths.
Tue 2nd March
- Good Morning Greater Manchester with Carl Austin-Behan - 09.00 - 09.15 - Carl Austin-Behan is well known for being one of Manchester's leading LGBT activists, as well as being the city's first openly gay Lord Mayor. Hear Carl's story about resilience and overcoming adversity in order to get to where he is today.
- Maths and Our Future Buildings - 10.00 - 10.45 - Join Ceri Travers, the Learning and Development Manager at William Hare to find out more about our business, what we do and the engineering apprenticeships that we have to offer. Find out how maths in used their every day jobs from design to welding to commercial. Subject areas: Maths, Engineering.
- The Power of People - 11.00 - 11.45 - Sarah and Anna both started off their careers in Retail/Hospitality and ended up working in HR (Human Resources), more through accident than design!. They learnt (the hard way) what they weren't good at and didn't particularly enjoy, but thankfully both found a career that they loved. Today's session will give you an introduction to careers in HR and Retail and how to get started. Subject areas: English
- Career opportunities with SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK - 13.00 - 13.45 - Join SUEZ in this session and find out what it means to contribute to shaping a sustainable environment, innovate, open up to the richness of cooperation and give your career dynamic prospects to achieve both professional and personal fulfilment. - Good Morning Greater Manchester with Sasha Lord - 09.00 - 09.15 - A motivational session aimed at school form time/first period with a different guest speaker each day. Sacha Lord is a co-creator of Parklife festival and The Warehouse Project, as well as the Night Time Economy Adviser for Greater Manchester. Join Sacha as he speaks about the decisions he made when leaving school and his journey through his career
- OpenMoney - 11:00 - 11.45 - Hear from Hannah Cole at OpenMoney about developing new tech to help people manage their money and get financial advice – covering software development, customer service and the finance sector. Subject areas: Maths, PSHE
