Overview

Melissa Harte’s Legacy: A Safer Focusing-Based Approach to Trauma Therapy Workshop with Lou Cooper - Melissa Harte Memorial Lecture

The Annual Memorial Melissa Harte Lecture stands as a testament to Dr. Harte's exceptional contributions to the world of Person-Centered Experiential and Emotion-Focused Therapy.

Proceeds from the Melissa Harte Memorial Lecture will go to the Australian Indigenous Psychologists Association (AIPA) to support the training of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander psychology students in Australia. AIPA's work aims to help achieve equitable participation of First Nation people within the psychology profession in order to address inequities in the provision of mental health services amongst indigenous communities.

About this talk:

Not everybody has an international annual lecture series established in their name, but here we are at the fifth Melissa Harte Memorial Lecture. What was it about Melissa and her work that deserves this celebration and this respect?

Blending tribute with theory and practice this lecture presents the Expanded Focusing Task as outlined in Melissa’s book, Processing Emotional Pain using Emotion Focused Therapy (2019), and describes the therapeutic safety principles that underpin this approach. As its name implies the Expanded Focusing Task builds on Gendlin’s focusing approach as practiced in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT).

Weaving lived experience into this account, we meet one therapist’s determination to leave a legacy that offers a safe and productive cocoon in which to work with some of the most fragile and traumatised clients.
