About this event

Inspirational Black Women in Music, Publishing and Fashion

Three women who have created and run brand new businesses, to encourage and support black authors and musicians and to offer affordable bespoke fashion to all women. They will talk about the businesses they have created and the challenges they have had to face.

Valerie Brandes, founder of inclusive independent publishing house Jacaranda Books, an award-winning independent publisher of award-winning adult fiction, non-fiction & YA. Jacaranda is committed to publishing ground-breaking writing with a dedication to creating space on the bookshelf for diverse ideas and writers.

Chi-chi Nwanoku enjoys an international life as a classical double bassist. Professor of double bass at the Royal Academy of Music she is the Founder, Artistic & Executive Director of Chineke! Foundation, whose mission is “championing change and celebrating diversity in classical music”. Awarded the OBE in 2017 for Services to Music, she won the Commonwealth Cultural Enterprise Award, Creative Industries Award, Top 10 BBC Women in Music and made Honorary Doctor of Music at Chichester and Open University.

Dr Maggie Semple is a successful business woman and entrepreneur. In 2010, Maggie founded the Semple brand comprising a luxury bespoke womenswear business with a working atelier in Covent Garden, London, an online magazine with over 8m viewers and an events programme. Maggie serves on a range of Boards. She is a NED of Jamaica National Bank UK Ltd, member of University of Cambridge HR Committee, member of Queen’s Counsel Selection Panel, a Trustee of South Bank Arts Centre and Chair of Kerry Nicholls Dance Company. She was formerly a Non-Executive Director of the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) where she chaired the Audit and Risk Committee.
