Event description

Description

Have you ever wondered how best to preserve your old precious books? Would you like to have a look at our rare books collection? Join us for an evening with the Ri Heritage team to find out more about book conservation and make your own book shoe!

Meagen Smith (Ri Book and Paper Conservator) will start the evening off with a racketing journey through bookbinding history covering scrolls, ledgers, fine binding and a few scandals along the way ending with a demonstration of how to make the book model featured in the workshop.

After a quick break Charlotte New (Ri Curator of Collections), Jane Harrison (Ri Documentation Manager) and Meagen Smith will lead a hands-on workshop making models of book shoes to support items from the Ri's Rare Book Collection. Members are welcome to bring their own books along to the event.

There will be opportunities throughout the evening to ask members of the Ri Heritage team any questions relating to conservation and the collections of the Royal Institution.
